Put-in-Bay
Harbor energy
Choose South Bass Island for a compact village, restaurants, bars, attractions, monuments, golf carts, and a livelier social scene.
Across Lake Erie
Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island are not interchangeable day trips. One concentrates harbor bustle, attractions, and nightlife; the other spreads beaches, glacial history, nature, and a quieter village across a larger island landscape.
Put-in-Bay
Choose South Bass Island for a compact village, restaurants, bars, attractions, monuments, golf carts, and a livelier social scene.
Kelleys Island
Choose Kelleys for beaches, state-park landscape, glacial grooves, bicycles, golf carts, and more distance between the village and shoreline stops.
From Sandusky
Jet Express offers seasonal passenger service from downtown Sandusky. Confirm which island is served on the exact date and whether a bike requires an added fare.
With a vehicle
The Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line carries vehicles from Marblehead on a first-come basis. An online ticket does not necessarily reserve boarding priority.

South Bass Island
Passenger ferries arrive close to a village of restaurants, shops, rentals, attractions, and nightlife. It suits groups that want several choices within a compact social district rather than a long nature loop.
Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial interprets the Battle of Lake Erie and the later peace among the United States, Canada, and Britain. The National Park Service says the plazas, rotunda, and observation deck are inaccessible throughout the 2026 and 2027 seasons during Upper Plaza Rehabilitation; the visitor center and grounds remain available subject to current hours and conditions.

Kelleys Island
Kelleys Island State Park, beaches, glacial features, quarry history, village stops, and quiet roads spread the day beyond one harbor block. Bikes and golf carts can fit the scale, but weather, road comfort, age, and rental terms should decide the vehicle.
The famous glacial grooves are an exposed geologic site, not an activity requiring a long hike. Pair them with the state park, shoreline, and village rather than overselling the stop as a full-day attraction by itself.

On the water
A short-looking ferry ride still needs parking, ticketing, boarding, and possible lines. Save the exact terminal address and operator; Sandusky, Port Clinton, Marblehead, and the island docks are not substitutes.
Lake Erie can feel cooler and windier than downtown. Carry a light layer, sun protection, water, and only the bags the group can move easily. Bikes, coolers, pets, carts, vehicles, and accessibility assistance each have operator-specific rules.
One island, one round trip
Check weather, service alerts, parking, both sailing times, and the operator's boarding guidance.
Arrive before the operator's stated boarding time with the ticket, bags, and bike or vehicle rules already checked.
Rent only after matching the route, group mobility, weather, license rules, and return time.
Return to the dock early enough that a missed sailing does not become a lodging problem.
Sandusky passenger service is seasonal. Some dates or routes may use Port Clinton or Marblehead instead, and event weekends can alter demand and schedules.
Golf-cart availability, rental age and license rules, deposits, overnight use, and traffic laws belong to the current rental operator and local authority. Do not describe a cart as guaranteed transportation.
Beaches, swimming conditions, park facilities, monument access, tours, and seasonal businesses can change with weather, staffing, maintenance, and lake conditions.

Verify the exact route and island conditions through the operator and public authority closest to the decision.
Questions before the trip
Both can work. Put-in-Bay concentrates attractions and food near the village; Kelleys spreads beaches, glacial features, and state-park stops across a larger island. Choose from the children's ages, mobility, travel distances, and current ferry schedule rather than a universal ranking.
Downtown Sandusky service is generally passenger-oriented. The Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line carries vehicles from Marblehead. Confirm the exact operator and current route before driving to a terminal.
Not automatically. Put-in-Bay's village can be explored largely on foot, while broader island loops may favor a bike or cart. Match transportation to route, weather, mobility, rental rules, and the return sailing.
Only when a current operator explicitly offers an island-hopping schedule with enough time ashore. On a first trip, choosing one island leaves more time for its village, shore, or state-park stops.
